Built by the British in 1908 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) is India's only rack-and-pinion mountain railway. The vintage steam locomotive chugs over 250 bridges, through 16 tunnels, and past steep tea gardens between Ooty, Coonoor, and Mettupalayam.
