What is the Green Tax and Why Does it Exist?
The Nilgiris is an incredibly fragile ecosystem, home to the UNESCO Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Decades of heavy vehicular tourism led to severe pollution, littering, and strain on local resources. To combat this, the district administration introduced the Green Tax (often referred to as an eco-tax).
This mandatory toll fee applies to all vehicles that are not registered in the Nilgiris (i.e., non-TN-43 vehicles). The funds collected are strictly utilized for environmental conservation, plastic waste management, and the maintenance of public facilities across the district.

How Do You Pay?
Historically, this resulted in massive traffic jams at the Kallar and Kakkanalla checkposts as officials manually issued paper receipts.
FASTag Integration
The checkposts have now integrated the Green Tax directly into the FASTag system. When you drive through the major toll gates (like Burliyar on the Coonoor route), the amount is automatically deducted from your FASTag account.
Negative Scenario: FASTag Failure
What happens if your FASTag doesn't scan or you enter via an obscure route?
If the system is down, or if you take a lesser-known village road that lacks a scanner, you may be stopped manually by local municipality workers at a physical barricade. Always keep ₹50-₹100 in exact cash handy just in case, and demand a physical printed receipt.
Who is Exempt?
- TN-43 Registered Vehicles: Locals of the Nilgiris do not pay the tax.
- Government Vehicles: On official duty.
- Essential Goods Vehicles: Trucks carrying milk, vegetables, and daily necessities are generally exempt from the tourist eco-tax, though standard commercial tolls apply.
Renting a car in Bangalore? (KA registration) You are not exempt. You must pay the Green Tax just like any other tourist vehicle.
