The Reality of Ghat Driving
Driving in the Nilgiris is not for beginners. The roads feature steep inclines, blind corners, and consecutive hairpin bends. Whether you are driving an automatic or a manual transmission, the most critical rule of mountain driving is Engine Braking.
Scenario: Brake Failure on Descents
Tourists often ride their brakes continuously while driving downhill. The friction overheats the brake pads until they completely glaze over and fail—a terrifying and common occurrence on the Masinagudi route. Always shift to a lower gear (1st or 2nd) and let the engine naturally slow the car down. Use brakes only intermittently.
Honk at Hairpins
Give a short honk before entering blind hairpin bends to warn oncoming buses.
Monsoon Hazards (Jun-Aug)
- Landslides: The Burliyar stretch on the Coonoor-Mettupalayam route is highly prone to mudslides during heavy rains. The road is occasionally closed for clearance.
- Zero Visibility Fog: Cloud cover can roll in within minutes, dropping visibility to less than 10 feet. Always use low-beam fog lights (high beams reflect off the fog and blind you). Check our Live Nilgiris Weather Radar before driving.
- Tree Falls: High winds often uproot old eucalyptus trees, blocking traffic for hours.
Negative Scenario: Breakdown
What if your car breaks down midway?
Cellular network is notoriously spotty on the Ghat roads (especially on the Kotagiri and Gudalur stretches). If you suffer a breakdown or a flat tire, pull over as far left as possible and deploy your hazard triangle. Do not rely on calling a tow truck immediately; you may have to wait for a passing local police patrol or hitch a ride to the nearest village to find a mechanic.
Peak Summer Traffic Diversions (April & May)
During the peak summer season and the annual Flower Show, the volume of tourist vehicles exceeds the capacity of the narrow hill roads. The police implement a strict one-way loop system.
Going UP to Ooty
All ascending traffic from Mettupalayam is diverted via the Coonoor Route (NH81). This route is strictly made one-way upwards. You cannot drive down via Coonoor during these months.
Going DOWN to the Plains
All descending traffic leaving Ooty is diverted via the Kotagiri Route. This adds slightly to the distance but ensures a continuous, safe flow of traffic without bottlenecks.
