What is Government Botanical Garden?

Established in 1848 by Marquis of Tweeddale, the Government Botanical Garden spans 55 acres across terraced hill slopes. It houses over 1,000 species of exotic and indigenous plants, medicinal herbs, bonsai, glasshouses, and a 20-million-year-old fossilized tree trunk presented by the Geological Survey of India.

Historical & Cultural Significance

Laid out by British horticulturist William Graham McIvor, the garden combines Italian terraced design with English landscape features. The upper lawn terraces host authentic Toda tribal huts, representing the indigenous culture of the Nilgiri hills.
