What is St. Stephen's Church?

Consecrated in 1830, St. Stephen's Church is the oldest church in the Nilgiri district. Built under the supervision of John Sullivan (founder of Ooty), its striking Gothic architecture features massive wooden beams hauled from Tipu Sultan's Palace in Seringapatam following the Anglo-Mysore War.

Historical & Cultural Significance

The church roof's main wooden beams were dragged by elephants up the Sigur Ghat from the plains of Mysore. The church features beautiful stained-glass windows representing the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, as well as historical memorial plaques honoring early Nilgiri pioneers.
